Looking to fill your cooler with some of the best eating fish the Pacific has to offer? Our San Francisco ocean fishing charter targets the rocky reefs and underwater structure where rockfish and lingcod call home. This isn't your typical bay fishing trip – we're heading out to the deeper waters where the big fish live. With generous limits and prime fishing grounds just offshore from the Golden Gate, you'll have plenty of opportunities to load up on quality fillets. Weather plays a big role out here, but when conditions line up, the fishing can be absolutely spectacular.
This is a personalized fishing experience designed for one angler who wants to maximize their time on the water. We'll launch from San Francisco and make our way to proven rockfish and lingcod spots along the coast. The beauty of targeting these species is they're structure-oriented, so once we find good bottom, the action tends to stay consistent. You'll be fishing in 80-200 feet of water over rocky reefs, kelp beds, and underwater pinnacles where these fish set up shop. The boat rides can vary depending on where the fish are biting – sometimes we're fishing within sight of the Golden Gate Bridge, other times we're pushing out to deeper offshore structure. Either way, you're in for some serious bottom fishing action.
We're talking classic bottom fishing here – heavy jigs, large baits, and stout tackle that can handle the rocky terrain and powerful fish. Most of the time we'll be using 4-8 oz sinkers to get down through the current and stay tight to the bottom where these fish feed. Live bait like anchovies and sardines work great when available, but don't overlook the effectiveness of fresh dead baits like squid strips and whole anchovies. Jigs in white, green, and blue patterns are also deadly, especially the heavier models that get down fast and stay in the strike zone. We'll be fishing straight up and down most of the time, feeling for that telltale thump of a fish picking up your bait. The key is staying in contact with the bottom while avoiding snags in the rocks – it's a delicate balance that comes with experience.
Lingcod are the main target here, and for good reason – these are some of the most aggressive and best-eating fish in Northern California waters. These prehistoric-looking predators can grow massive, with fish over 20 pounds not uncommon in San Francisco waters. Lingcod are ambush predators that hang around rocky structure, waiting to slam anything that looks like an easy meal. They're most active during the cooler months from October through April, which coincides perfectly with the calmest ocean conditions. What makes lingcod so exciting to catch isn't just their size – it's their attitude. When you hook one, you know it immediately. They fight hard, diving back toward the rocks and making powerful runs. Plus, lingcod have some of the firmest, whitest meat you'll find in the ocean. The daily limit allows for generous take-home quantities, so you can stock your freezer with restaurant-quality fish. Don't be surprised if you hook into some of the various rockfish species too – vermillion, canary, and bocaccio rockfish all share the same habitat and provide excellent table fare as bonus catches.
San Francisco ocean fishing offers some of the most consistent action on the West Coast when conditions allow. The combination of productive fishing grounds, generous limits, and top-quality eating fish makes this trip a favorite among serious anglers. Whether you're looking to fill the freezer or just want to experience some of the best bottom fishing California has to offer, this charter delivers. The personalized approach means we can adjust techniques and locations based on what's working best, giving you the flexibility to make the most of your time on the water. Ocean conditions can change quickly out here, so we'll work with the weather to ensure you have a safe and productive trip. Book your San Francisco fishing charter today and get ready to experience some of the finest rockfish and lingcod action the Pacific Coast has to offer.
Despite their name, lingcod aren't actually cod - they're greenlings with a seriously gnarly appearance. These ambush predators have massive heads, wicked sharp teeth, and mottled coloring that helps them blend into rocky bottom structure. Around San Francisco, we typically find them in 30-300 feet of water near rocky reefs and kelp beds where they lie in wait for anything that swims by. They're not picky eaters and will grab just about any bait or lure you drop down. What makes them fun to target is their aggressive nature - once hooked, they put up a solid fight and don't give up easily. The meat is excellent eating too, with firm white fillets that freeze well. Best local tip: use a heavy jig and bounce it right along the bottom structure. When a lingcod hits, you'll know it - they grab hard and hold on. Just watch those teeth when you bring them aboard!
